From the Manobo word “Salu” meaning cooperation and “pongan” meaning unity, together meaning unity, gathering or solidarity. Salupongan the song and video itself was a historic gathering of almost a hundred artists, vocalists and musicians uniting to stand in solidarity with the Lumad, the indigenous people of Mindanao.

In October 2015, when thousands of Lumads, supporters and activists from Mindanao, joined the Manilakbayan 2015 and marched from Mindanao to Manila, a national clamour to pay attention and support the Lumad cause and peoples resistance in Mindanao spread like wild fire.

Following the gruesome public killings of three key figures in the tribal school ALCADEV in CARAGA - Emercito Samarca, Datu Bello Sinzo and Lumad leader Dionel Campos, the people could not turn a blind eye anymore to the displacement and oppression suffered by our Lumad brothers and sisters.

Collaborations between Mindanaon cultural workers and people from all over the world also started forming and coming into play. SALUPONGAN music video is one such collaboration.

SALUPONGAN music video is the historical salupongan or coming together of over a hundred artists - actors, musicians, film makers, photographers, singers, enthusiasts and activists from various genres and generations to contribute to the awareness campaign for the Lumad, particularly the STOP LUMAD KILLINGS and SAVE OUR SCHOOLS campaigns.

The music was composed by multi-instrumentalist folk musician and a Mindanaon, Onie Badiang, with words by Tunog Bobongan, and arrangements by Dodjie Fernandez of Patatag and Iron Tribe Studio, Christopher Borela of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, and Baihana's Krina Cayabyab.

The music video is directed by multi-awarded director Carlos Siguion-Reyna and participated by actors and singers as John Arcilla, Christopher De Leon, Edgar Mortiz, Isay Alvarez, Robert Sena, Myke Salomon, Aicelle Santos, Jerald Napoles, Cris Villonco, Loy Martinez, Bayang Barrios, Mae Paner, Bo Cerrudo, Poppert Bernadas, UP Cherubim and Seraphim, Coro De Sta. Cecilia, BULSU Saring Himig, Baihana, Patatag, and many more.
